3 things you should always do after a wreck

Imagine driving to work in downtown Denver, like you do almost every morning when your normally boring commute turns much more exciting. While those first few moments after a car wreck can seem like a blur, it is important to stay focused and take the appropriate steps. Here are a few things you should always do immediately after a motor vehicle collision.

Call 911

After an accident, the first thing you should do is to pull over, out of traffic, if you are able to do so. Also, turn on your hazards to alert other drivers that there is a problem. Next, call 911 to report the accident so that the police and medical help arrive as quickly as possible. Even if the wreck was minor and no one sustained injuries, it is still a good idea to call the police to file a report. You will probably need this when it comes time to file a claim for damages.

Exchange information

While you are waiting for the police to arriver, one of the things you can do is to exchange insurance and contact information with the other driver. While it is typically the responsibility of each driver to notify his or her insurer, it is best not to depend on the at-fault driver to do this. Be proactive and call the other driver’s insurance company as well as your own as soon as possible.

Take pictures

In addition to the above, you should take pictures of the accident and the area where it occurred. This could provide more proof of the damages to your car and your injuries in support of your claim. Take a few moments to speak with witnesses as well. Try to get a few statements and contact information from anyone who witnessed the accident. The more support you have for your claim of damages, the better chance you have of receiving the compensation you deserve.
