When anybody in Colorado is accused of a crime that involves a weapon, it is typically extremely serious. The reason for this is that the law generally presumes that an individual who possesses a weapon had the intention to use it for other violent crimes. Even attempts to create fear of serious injury in another person by pointing a firearm can lead to severe punishment.
Police in Colorado Springs reported such a case in which a man was arrested after a short chase. They say a person at a mall in Colorado Springs alleged a man pulled a gun and threatened him. Police say the incident was reported shortly after 6 p.m. at the Citadel Mall. The man allegedly fled when he noticed a pursuing patrol car.
A brief chase followed during which the fleeing man allegedly increased speed in an attempt to get away. At one stage he made a sharp turn but came to a halt when a traffic light turned red. Police reportedly used this opportunity to arrest the driver. They claim to have located a handgun in the suspect’s vehicle, and the accuser later identified him as the man who threatened him with a firearm.
It may be a good idea for anyone in Colorado who is accused of violent crimes or threatening another person with a firearm to retain the services of a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. An experienced attorney can protect the accused person’s legal rights and scrutinize the charges and the methods used by law enforcement during the search and seizure process as well as the arrest before devising a defense strategy. If any irregularities are identified, they can be addressed in the court.
