Criminal law: 16-year-old keeps Colorado cops busy before arrest

Police in Colorado Springs had a busy morning on a recent Thursday in pursuit of an alleged car thief. Criminal law prohibits officials from revealing the identity of the teenager who was eventually arrested. The whole incident lasted only 40 minutes but involved a car theft, burglary, escape, hit-and-run, gun pointing and, ultimately, an arrest. A 16-year-old teen will now be exploring defense options while waiting to learn the details of the charges that will be filed against him.

According to the police report, at approximately 11 a.m., officers noticed a car that was linked to a burglary and had earlier been reported as a stolen vehicle. Their attempt to pull it off the road failed, as did their efforts to chase after it — due to traffic conditions. A report then came in about a hit-and-run incident with the description of the stolen car. Reportedly, a witness and the hit-and-run victim tried to give chase but stopped that attempt when an occupant in the stolen car allegedly pointed a gun at them.

Police spotted the car again, but the threat to the safety of others forced them to abandon their pursuit once again. A tip came in about an abandoned car matching the description, and police gave chase on foot. At about 11:40 a.m., they arrested a 16-year-old boy who was said to have been one of three teens running away. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and charges are pending.

Facing criminal charges at age 16 can be devastating to the future of any young man — especially if a conviction is obtained. The most logical step for an accused teenager may be to seek the support and guidance of an experienced criminal defense attorney. The lawyer will know the levels of protection Colorado criminal law offers when juveniles face charges, and he or she can work on achieving the best possible outcome that will least impact the future of the teenager.
