Police report that luggage of travelers was stolen off the Denver International Airport’s baggage carousels on 16 different occasions during 2018. When a Bennett man reported that his bag did not turn up on the carousel after he returned from a trip in November, a detective told him that a suspected serial thief likely took it. Records indicate that the estimated losses of the victims total almost $30,000.
During investigations, airport police studied surveillance footage and apparently noticed one man that was hanging around the carousels loaded with baggage at the times when lost luggage was reported. Investigators identified a 28-year-old man and obtained an arrest warrant. They allege this man stole suitcases containing the personal belongings of many passengers.
It was further discovered that the suspect had a storage locker that he rented in Adams County. A search of the locker yielded various pieces of stolen travel bags. The man is now facing a felony theft charge that was filed by the Denver District Attorney.
Anyone who faces criminal charges in Denver is innocent in the eyes of the law until, and if, the prosecution can prove guilt in court and beyond a reasonable doubt. Until then they will remain only allegations. However, the severity of such charges must not be disregarded, and the best step is to secure the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. A lawyer can protect the legal rights of the defendant while working on getting charges reduced or dismissed or, when this is not possible, achieving the best possible outcome under the circumstances presented.
