Criminal charges filed after fatal Highway 9 U-turn in Colorado

On Behalf of | Aug 22, 2017 | Criminal Law

A collision on Highway 9 in Colorado on a recent Saturday led to the death of one person and injuries to several other occupants of the two vehicles that were involved. Victims were taken to different hospitals for treatment of injuries of varying severity. One of the drivers was arrested upon his release from the hospital, and he is now facing criminal charges.

According to a preliminary accident report, an SUV was traveling north on the highway, occupied by the driver and four passengers. Following behind, heading in the same direction, was a pickup truck with an attached trailer. Along with the driver, this vehicle had two additional passengers. Shortly after 4 p.m., the SUV driver pulled off the roadway onto the right shoulder, and the pickup truck driver veered left into the southbound lanes to pass the SUV safely.

Unexpectedly, the SUV driver allegedly initiated a U-turn and traveled directly into the path of the passing pickup truck. The subsequent collision caused multiple injuries and also the death of a 33-year-old passenger in the SUV. Others in that vehicle suffered injuries varying from minor to serious — with the driver’s injuries reported as minor.

The SUV driver was locked up in a county jail in Colorado after his arrest. He now faces criminal charges that include two counts of vehicular assault, vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and carrying out an unsafe U-turn. Most people who face criminal charges waste no time in securing the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney to protect their legal rights and advocate for them during the subsequent legal proceedings, always aiming to achieve the best possible outcome.
