A 72-year-old Colorado Springs resident was recently arrested for a murder that took place 45 years ago. Advances in DNA technology have led to skilled criminal law attorneys being called upon more and more to defend individuals who are arrested for violent crimes in cold cases. This follows another recent arrest of the alleged Golden State Killer for a murder that was committed 26 years ago.
The development of genealogical websites that hold public DNA databases has enabled cold case investigators to look for close matches with DNA evidence that was collected years ago. Authorities say the DNA of a close relative of the 72-year-old man was found on the genealogical site. As part of the investigation, a profile of the suspected murderer was developed from the DNA evidence law enforcement had, and after releasing a sketch, a tip was received that reportedly led investigators to the Colorado Springs man.
The case for which this man was arrested involved an 11-year-old girl who was abducted on her walk home in July 1973. Her dead body was discovered the following day, and the killer remained at large. Details of the procedures used to identify the man as the alleged killer were not revealed. He now faces multiple charges related to murder, kidnapping and raping a child under age 14.
Anyone in Colorado who is accused of committing violent crimes will likely retain the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. The presence of legal counsel during questioning and interviews with the police is crucial to protect the right of the defendant. At that stage, the charges will be nothing more than allegations, and the accused person will remain innocent in the eyes of the law. Only if, and when, the prosecution can prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt can there be a conviction, and the defense attorney will work to achieve the best possible outcome.
