Awareness campaign a reminder of the motorcycling risks

May, as some Denver readers may know, is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, there are two main messages that are being promoted as part of the awareness campaign.

The first of these is that all motorists need to work at sharing the road and mutually respecting each other’s rights. This is an important issue, because it too often happens that drivers of larger vehicles treat motorcyclists as if they don’t have as much of a place on the road as they do. This attitude can lead to unsafe driving practices that unnecessarily put motorcyclists at risk.

At the same time, sharing the road is also a message motorcyclists need to hear as well, because the fact of the matter is that there are some motorcyclists out there who don’t drive with the recognition that they are obligated to abide by the rules of the road like any other motorist. When motorcyclists fail to follow the rules of the road, they not only put themselves at risk of an accident, but other drivers as well.

The second issue the campaign is promoting is the importance of sober riding. According to research, there is a greater percentage of intoxicated motorcyclists on the road that the percentage of intoxicated drivers. There are multiple reasons why it is unwise for motorcyclists to mix alcohol and riding, including that they could potentially limit their ability to receive damages for an accident caused by another driver.

We’ll explore this issue in our next post.
