Criminal law: Colorado Supreme Court ruling may set hundreds free

According to a recent Colorado Supreme Court ruling, sentences of criminal defendants cannot include probation and prison time for the same case. That means that those whose sentences consist of a term of probation after time spent in prison have another chance at freedom. This ruling stunned criminal law attorneys in the Colorado judicial system, and the Office of Attorney General Phil Weiser was given a deadline to petition the court for a rehearing.

Embezzlement charges filed against former city official

Reportedly, an investigation was launched into the activities of a former city district manager in Colorado. The investigation ultimately led to the man's arrest and a court appearance on embezzlement charges. Court documents allege the man kept cash paid to him for water, instead of depositing those payments into the appropriate Metro District bank account.

K9 trainer faces criminal impersonation charges

Several Colorado clients of a man who allegedly pretended to be a dog trainer claim to have lost thousands of dollars after hiring him. A warrant was recently issued for his arrest -- almost a year after accusations of theft and fraud were first made. Along with criminal impersonation, the man will also face felony theft charges when the arrest warrant is executed.

2 Colorado men arrested on suspicion of burglary

Facing criminal charges can have severe consequences for anyone in Colorado. Things that are said or done after an arrest can be used against the accused individual later. For that reason, most people who are charged with theft or burglary crimes seek legal counsel immediately.

Criminal law and justice can be intimidating

Most people in Colorado and across the United States gain their knowledge about criminal justice from books, television and movies. However, criminal law can be intimidating, and those who are accused of committing crimes might have many questions. The arrest process for any of the different types of crimes can be a humiliating and scary experience, especially if it is a first offense.

Criminal charges filed after crash that killed motorcyclist

An accident in Colorado on a recent Friday evening left one person dead and another one arrested. Criminal charges were filed against a 55-year-old pickup truck driver who is accused of causing the crash. Police in Colorado Springs are urging eyewitnesses to call and provide any information that might help the investigation.

Criminal law: What constitutes a crime?

There is no simple answer to the question of what constitutes a crime. The criminal justice system includes federal, state and local laws. Federal laws are passed by the U.S. Congress, and apply to people nationwide. State, city and county governing bodies in California pass local laws or ordinances, some of which also denote violations of criminal law.

Juvenile missteps can lead to damaging criminal record

Many missteps of juveniles in Colorado are not planned crimes. Peer pressure and the need to fit in and be popular lead many teenagers astray and unprepared for the consequences when their actions lead to arrests and convictions. Entering adulthood with already established criminal records can jeopardize college applications, job applications, obtaining credit and rental agreements.

Criminal defense: Man accused of robbing same place twice

Colorado police claim a robber returned for more within two hours of robbing a Dairy Queen outlet. They received an emergency call about a robbery in progress at approximately 9 p.m. on a recent Monday. The caller claimed the robber was threatening the staff at the store with several guns.

Criminal charges filed against suspected baggage thief

Police report that luggage of travelers was stolen off the Denver International Airport's baggage carousels on 16 different occasions during 2018. When a Bennett man reported that his bag did not turn up on the carousel after he returned from a trip in November, a detective told him that a suspected serial thief likely took it. Records indicate that the estimated losses of the victims total almost $30,000.
