Concerns raised about hit-and-run accidents in Denver

On Behalf of | Sep 25, 2019 | Hit And Run Accidents

Authorities in Denver are concerned about the safety of cyclists, scooter riders and pedestrians amid the ever-increasing traffic volumes on metro streets. Reportedly, so far this year, an average of two people per month lost their lives or suffered serious injuries in hit-and-run accidents in the city. Even more concerning is the fact that less than half of the drivers involved have been arrested.

Based on Denver Police Department figures, four hit-and-run accidents between Jan. 1 and Aug. 17 were fatal, and a further 17 left victims with serious injuries. However, only nine arrests were made in those 21 hit-and-run accidents. Authorities say at least three more such incidents occurred after Aug. 17, with arrests made in two.

The victims in most of these cases had no protection, often resulting in traumatic or catastrophic injuries — or death. In one of the accidents in which the hit-and-run driver was arrested, a moped rider suffered three fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, brain swelling, a broken femur and other injuries. The report did not mention how the 2019 numbers compares to previous years.

For the injured victims of hit-and-run accidents, or the surviving family members of those who were killed, recovering damages can be a challenging process, especially if the driver remains at large. For them, the sensible step would be to consult with an experienced Denver personal injury attorney. A lawyer can assist with the process of pursuing recovery of compensation through insurance, or if a negligent driver has been identified, through the Colorado civil justice system in a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit.
