SUVs are more likely than sedans to save passengers in crashes

On Behalf of | Aug 17, 2018 | Auto Accidents

Colorado drivers commute through Denver, travel to the Rocky Mountains and explore various national parks in their vehicles. Although more fuel-efficient, smaller sedans prove risky to drive if involved in a serious car accident.

SUVs, due to their weight, build and size, offer greater outer protection when involved in a serious collision. SUVs’ bodies offer more material and structure, so that if the vehicle experiences a rollover crash, the general structure works to stay intact. You may want to purchase a larger vehicle if traveling often to avoid a serious motor vehicle accident, associated costs and injuries to you or a loved one.

IIHS reports SUVs are safer vehicles

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reported that in 2016, SUVs’ weight and size protect vehicle occupants more often than smaller sedans. Over 4,800 deaths occurred in SUVs, while nearly 14,000 deaths occurred in sedans in similar crashes in 2016. Equating to only 20% of the traffic deaths in the United States, SUVs prove the safer choice for vehicle.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), certain collisions occur most often than others, and having larger vehicles for protection can benefit both drivers and passengers.

Common types of vehicle crashes include:

  • Rollovers due to high speeds and quick turns
  • Rear-end collisions due to distracted driving
  • Collisions with other vehicles due to missed traffic signs

Car accident injuries and SUV protection

Though you cannot protect your family members from all roadway hazards, driving a vehicle that can sustain greater impact may prevent serious injury. Injuries inflicted on drivers and passengers usually include:

  • Broken ribs and legs
  • Seat-belt abrasions
  • Head injuries like traumatic brain injuries
  • Neck injuries like whiplash
  • Spinal cord injuries

If you and your family travel often, you may want to consider purchasing a larger, stable vehicle in the event you fall victim to a car accident. Especially in Colorado, where adventurous natives want to explore all areas of their beautiful state, it may prove wise to help prevent your family from receiving serious injury by driving a vehicle with more protection.
