Alleged bicycle thefts lead to criminal charges against 3 teens

When a police officer in Colorado Springs recently worked extra duty on a Sunday, he claims to have seen three individuals moving about among the bicycle racks at the Colorado College campus. Upon closer inspection, he allegedly saw three teenagers removing locked bicycles from the stands. The officer approached them, but the three youths avoided arrest for criminal charges by running away.

However, in their attempt to flee, the teens dropped a backpack and one stolen bicycle. Two of the men were later arrested and charged with two felony charges for possession of tools to commit burglary and suspicion of theft of goods valued between $20,000 and $100,000. They also face misdemeanor charges for criminal mischief.

Reportedly, the two men, ages 18 and 19, both admitted to stealing bicycles from the bike racks, and officers claim to have recovered stolen bicycles worth over $7,500. Another teenager, alleged to be the third one of the three that were seen taking the bikes, was arrested the following day. Police reports indicate that he also admitted to the theft. Upon a search of their home, law enforcement allegedly found more bikes and frames -- one reportedly linked to another theft.

Being convicted on criminal charges at such a young age could be detrimental to the future of any person. It can jeopardize their chances of successful applications for jobs, employment, loans and more. For that reason, the most logical step might be to secure the services of an experienced Colorado criminal defense attorney. A lawyer can devise a defense strategy that aims to avoid a conviction, or an attorney can negotiate a plea to obtain a lesser charge or work to have the charges dropped in exchange for restitution.
