What can Colorado riders expect from motorcycle accidents?

Colorado's wide-open spaces have been calling you, and you're aching to appreciate them. The view from the back of a motorcycle seems like the ideal vantage point for the trip, but it comes with risks.

It doesn't matter how defensive or alert you are when you ride. You owe it to yourself to be aware of the worst-case scenario.

The basic risks and risk factors for motorcyclists

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, or CDOT, only 3 percent of all active vehicles registered in the state are motorcycles. Surprisingly, however, motorcyclists are involved in a disproportionate 21 percent of roadway fatalities.

What's behind the lopsided motorcycle wreck mortality rate? CDOT says that certain circumstances can significantly raise your accident likelihood.

Many crash incidents involve drivers making left turns and colliding with motorcycles that they failed to notice. From blind-spot crashes to poor road conditions, risks are all around you. Federal government data also noted dangers like riders' alcohol usage, experience on two wheels, accident history and even height.

The aftermath and future

Despite your best efforts, you can't always control for every riding hazard. Sadly, the factors you overlook are usually the ones that decide the outcome of your accident.

Every motorcycle wreck is unique, and so are the injuries, mental trauma, loss and property damage they cause. There's no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery. Your strategy needs to suit your situation and make it easy for you to plan.

Your injuries may leave you in a hospital bed for blessedly short days or long, anguishing months. You may lose your current job, or your accident could cast a permanent shadow across your once-bright career path.

It's not always easy to evaluate your legal options alone.

Many wreck victims don't even anticipate how much harder paying medical bills will be when they can't work. If you're an injured parent, you might have to spend extra money paying someone to help you look after your kids. If your spouse gets hurt, then you'll most likely have to take care of them.

Suing someone in search of a settlement won't automatically solve everything. Colorado judges can throw cases out of court for a variety of reasons. It's essential to prepare your evidence and arguments properly if you don't want your time and money to go to waste. When you're struggling to recover from a motorcycle accident, inadequate representation only makes the path ahead trickier.
