3 things to do after a hit and run accident

Any car accident is troubling, but hit and runs can be especially upsetting. If you were hit by someone who fled the scene, you are probably feeling a mixture of anger and confusion. You likely have a lot of questions about how you will be reimbursed for your vehicle damage and any injuries. Despite the negligent and enraging behavior of the other driver, you can take certain steps to work towards a favorable outcome.

Properly documenting the incident, notifying the police and contacting your insurance company should be your top priorities following a hit and run collision. Keep reading for more details on what to do in this unfortunate situation.

1. Gather as much information as possible

If you can, get as many details about the motorist as possible. The more information you have, the better. Try to record the license plate number, the make, model and color of the vehicle, and which direction it was going. You should also take photos of your vehicle's damage and multiple angles of the accident scene. Identify any witnesses and exchange contact information with them.

2. Call law enforcement

Do not try to take matters into your own hands by chasing the driver who hit you. Contain your anger and leave it to the law. Notify the authorities about the accident immediately and provide them with contact information of any witnesses. The police may be able to use your information to find and arrest the driver.

3. Notify your insurance company

Your insurance company will begin the process of reviewing your claim. Depending on your policy, they may also be able to help tow your car and find a rental. If you have the license plate number of the other vehicle, you may be able to get in contact with that driver's insurance company and file a claim there too.

After a hit and run accident, you may be confused and disoriented. Remembering these steps to follow can help you get on track immediately, as well as assist with any insurance and legal requirements as you go on with your life after the accident.
