The problem of distracted driving in Colorado

Nationally, the Center for Disease Control estimates about eight people die each day because of distracted driving. The Colorado Department of Transportation believes that distracted driving causes 40 accidents every day within the state. Some assume that teenagers and young adults are the worst offenders for distracted driving, but drivers of all ages can easily get distracted. Talking on the phone or texting is not the only distraction that can take your attention away from the road.

There are three types of distractions

  • Visual distractions are when you take your eyes off the road; for example, you look at your phone to see who is calling you.
  • Manual distractions are when you take your hands off the wheel. You change the radio channel or eat a burger.
  • Cognitive distractions occur when you take your mind off driving, such as carrying on a heated conversation.

Texting is especially dangerous because it involves all three types of distractions. The law prohibits drivers 18 and older from texting while driving, but some drivers still take the risk. However, even a hands-free device can be a distraction from driving, especially in intersections with heavy traffic or in construction. It is much better to pull over or wait to make that phone call than to risk an accident.

Distracted driving is a huge problem on the roads

Some officials believe that distracted driving is underreported because no one wants to admit they were doing something else in the car when they were supposed to be driving. Multitasking while driving is not a good idea because driving is the most dangerous activity that most people do every day.

If you suffered an injury in a car accident in which you believe someone was driving distracted, you may have a good personal injury claim. It would be good to discuss your situation with an attorney before settling the claim with an insurance company. Hold the other driver responsible to keep the roads safe.
