Motorcycle accidents: Alleged DUI driver caused biker's death

Accidents involving cars and motorcycles often have tragic consequences. Motorcycle accidents in Colorado and elsewhere typically offer the riders little chance of survival because they lack the protections enjoyed by those in covered vehicles. Instead of having safety belts and airbags to safeguard against catastrophic injuries, bikers have only their crash helmets -- if they wear them.

Such a crash caused critical injuries to a 25-year-old biker on a recent Friday. Reportedly, at approximately 9 p.m. he crashed into a car whose driver apparently committed a left turn violation. The county coroner reported that the biker succumbed to his injuries just after 5 p.m. on the following day.

Authorities say the driver of the vehicle into which the motorcyclist crashed was suspected of being drunk at the time of the accident. He was arrested, and he is now facing charges of suspicion of impaired driving, a left-turn violation and felony vehicular assault. Although he was booked into the county jail, he was later released to await his next court appearance.

Families of those whose lives are lost in motorcycle accidents may be entitled to pursue recovery of financial and emotional damages. Proving negligence on the part of another party could be a challenge, and many choose to utilize the skills of an experienced wrongful death attorney. A lawyer can launch an independent investigation to find the cause of the accident and use that information to establish negligence to substantiate a claim for monetary damages in a Colorado civil court. The attorney can also assist with determining the value of the losses to include in a documented claim for the court's adjudication.
