Hit and run accidents: Pedestrian killed during street race

Charges have been filed in what Colorado police say was a fatal car wreck related to street racing. The driver allegedly responsible for the wreck was charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving, among other allegations. When hit and run accidents occur, sometimes it is hard to find the driver responsible; however, police were able to locate the suspect quickly with the help of his family members.

Street racing is believed to have been going on when the wreck happened at approximately 9:00 at night. A 26-year-old man was struck and killed by a 17-year-old teenage driver who fled the scene after leaving his vehicle nearby. It is not clear if other drivers who were present for the street racing remained on scene.

The teen driver was arrested only an hour after the wreck. Apparently, some of his family members were aware of his alleged actions and turned the teen into police. At that time, police also discovered that the teen did not have a driver's license and instead was driving on a temporary permit. Aside from reckless driving and vehicular homicide, he was also charged for drag racing and hit-and-run.

Criminal charges filed against negligent drivers who cause serious injury or death can be effective at removing dangerous individuals from the road, but they do not necessarily provide justice to affected victims and their families. When Colorado families must deal with the unexpected deaths of loved ones from hit and run accidents, they can achieve just compensation through the successful filing of wrongful death claims. Even in the event that the suspected driver is not found, fair compensation is usually still possible through a victim's personal insurance policy.
